Removing Negative People from Your Life

We all know the importance of detoxifying our bodies from all the junk we eat and the polluted environment we live in. Much similar to the way our body demands detoxification, our minds and life needs detoxification too. After all, a healthy body and lifestyle depends on a health mind. Thus, the need to cut out negative and toxic people from our lives is very important. However, there is a very subtle yet significant difference between pessimists and negative people. While a pessimist does not seem to see the brighter side of a situation and anticipate failure in everything they do, negative people can be detrimental not only to your progress but also in your well-being. Sometimes negative people get bound to our lives for years without even our knowledge about them being hampering our success and mental health. On the contrary, often we realize someone being negative and toxic to us but such people are so inherently comingled in our lives that we cannot find a way out to get rid of them. Here are few tips on how you can eliminate such negative and toxic people from your life.

Distance yourself from negative people:

The first step to remove negative people from your lives is to distance yourself from them. There is no better solution that removing them from being too involved in your lives. Negative people constantly force you to give your energy and resources to suit their needs. They make your compromise on your own comforts, goals and well-being. When you realize that someone’s negativity is actually hampering you from taking care of yourself or preventing you from growing in your career, take a firm decision in distancing them from your life. Avoid entertaining their demands and requests and limit your interactions to bare minimum

Do not let yourself in their crisis:

One of the most common traits of negative people is they are always in crisis. It is important to know that these ‘crisis’ is self-made. They need attention and a scope to manipulate people. Despite helping such people out of a crisis by lending your supportive shoulders, they will always come up with something else dragging you into their lives, craving for more attention and time. Make sure you do not run to their rescue every time. Unless the person is clinically depressed, in which case such people are not negative but just going through a rough patch, let them know you love them and available for support. Unless otherwise, do not mistake a depressed soul with a person of negative attitude.

Do not be too kind:

Negative people draw all your goodness from you to satisfy their own need for attention. Such people project an issue out of proportion and are ever in the look-out to draw your concern and attention towards them. It is vital that you stop being over-accommodative for them. The more you show kindness, the more you get pulled into the mess of dealing with negative people.

Set Boundaries:

Set boundaries for negative people as they have a tendency to tap your weakness and get back to your life. Sometimes, it might get difficult to cut them off completely from your life. In situations like this, set mental limitations and stay firm to them. Negative people might throw up serious tantrums and at times, blackmail you to get back to them to satisfy their emotional needs. Do not give in to those dramas since they are set up intentionally and have no merit to them.

Understand their motives:

Negative people often cast their weaknesses and negativity on you and make them look like yours. This can create a lot of mental tension and affect your well-being. One of the important things to take care of while removing negative people from your life is to remove their emotional latch from you. Do not let them see how their negativity is affecting you. The more you show reaction to their negative actions, the more they will overshadow you and your goodness.

Don’t expect them to change:

Do not reason with negative people. Neither have long counseling sessions with them. Because they do not need it. They clearly know and understand what they are doing and how they aim their actions to affect you. Rather, focus on your own areas of improvement. Build healthy relationships around you to cut the negativity from your life.

We have all faced negative people in our lives. Such people come in various forms. They can be a friend, a co-worker or a partner. Sometimes, our lives may not make much sense to us around them and you may have self-harm thoughts if you continue too long with them. It is thus crucial to realize that you are the maker of your own life and no one else and if a behavior of someone close to you is affecting your mood and success, it is high time you act stern and cut out such people from your life.
